Niles Township Democratic Meetup
Submitted by Leah Yarrow on Wed, 02/11/2009 - 1:14pm.In a commercial that’s recently been airing, President Obama makes a compelling request for people like us, people who can see what needs to be done, to step forward and help renew America through service.
The Niles Township Democratic Meetup has begun to do just that. A small committee met to make preliminary plans for a first project in support of the township food pantry—and we’ll share them and ask your help in refining them.
Several people who attended the inauguration in Washington will be giving their eye-witness reports. Friday will only be a month since that incredible day. Let’s not lose sight of it yet!
Please join us! And please bring donations of food, toiletries, and/or baby supplies for the food pantry.
(We begin at 7:00, but some come earlier to get a start on dinner and conversation.)
*RSVPs to lkyarrow@yahoo.com are helpful to plan for adequate seating.
Niles Township Democratic Meetup Pre-Inauguration Celebration (Skokie)
Submitted by Leah Yarrow on Mon, 01/05/2009 - 11:17pm.Yes we can celebrate!
The Niles Township Democratic Meetup is getting together for a pre-inauguration celebration. We’ll reminisce with tales from the campaign trail, so bring stories, mementos, and photos. We’ll also discuss how we can respond to President-elect Obama’s call for a day of national service.
Cynthia Carranza, director of the Niles Township Food Pantry, will be joining us to talk about the ever-growing need in our communities for food and basic baby-care and personal-care items. We’ve been collecting monthly for the food pantry, and your generosity has been much appreciated. But let's make a special effort this month, in honor of President Obama’s inauguration, to help stock the pantry’s shelves with our contributions.
*RSVPs to lkyarrow@yahoo.com are helpful to plan for adequate seating.
Niles Township Democratic Meetup (Skokie)
Submitted by Leah Yarrow on Wed, 11/12/2008 - 9:28pm.Where were you on election night? We all have stories--and accompanying emotions--about our election-night experiences, as well as about the campaigns we volunteered for, the people we encountered, and the lessons we learned.
We're meeting up to share our stories and our feelings about this historic presidential election and about the local races to which many of were devoted. It will be good to get together to celebrate our wins, console each other for our losses, and talk about the future.
We'll also be collecting food, as well as diapers, baby wipes, and baby food for the Niles Township Food Pantry. The need in our community continues to grow, so please bring a contribution if you can. The pantry is so grateful for our help

Niles Township Democratic Meetup (Skokie)
Submitted by Leah Yarrow on Mon, 07/07/2008 - 10:21pm.Last week, the 1 percent increase in Cook County’s sales tax went into effect, making Chicago’s sales tax rate—10.25 percent—the highest in the country. What impact will this have on us and on Cook County businesses—and is there another tax hike in our future?
Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin will join the Niles Township Democratic Meetup on Thursday, July 17th, to shed some light on the new sales tax and to update us on county services.
Commissioner Suffredin represents the 13th District, which includes the 49th & 50th Wards in Chicago, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northbrook, Skokie, Wilmette, Winnetka

Niles Township Democratic Meetup (Skokie)
Submitted by Leah Yarrow on Sun, 06/08/2008 - 9:57pm.
Illinois took a step on the road to ethics reform last month when the bill to curtail pay-to-play politics passed the Legislature and was sent to the Governor for signing. At this month's meetup, David Morrison, deputy director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, will talk with us about ethics reform and campaign finance reform in Illinois.
We'll also celebrate the end of the primary season and the selection of Barack Obama as the presumptive nominee of the Democratic Party.
Last month, we started a new tradition for the meetup: A food drive to help stock the Niles Township Food Pantry. The pantry helps more than 1,500 area residents every month--people who are having trouble feeding themselves and their families. With food prices skyrocketing along with fuel prices, families are suffering. We can do more than talk about the issues! So if you come, please bring a food donation with you.
Speaker begins at 7:00. Come early to get a start on dinner and discourse.

Submitted by Leah Yarrow on Fri, 01/11/2008 - 1:08pm.The Niles Township Democratic Meetup Debate-Watching Party in November was so much fun, we're going to have a watch-party again next week for the Democratic debate in Las Vegas. We'll be meeting next Tuesday night, January 15th, instead of our usual Thursday.
Come by at 7:00 to reconnect, opine about the presidential race, and hear from anyone who went to Iowa or New Hampshire to support a candidate. That will prime us for the debate, which is scheduled to begin at 8:00 CT.
It's lots more entertaining and exciting to watch together. Please say you'll come! RSVPs to lkyarrow@yahoo.com are helpful to plan for adequate seating

Submitted by michellegh2004 on Thu, 11/08/2007 - 9:34pm.
Our November meetup next Thursday, November 15th is coincidentally the night of the next scheduled Democratic debate. It looks like it will be airing in Chicago at the same time our speaker usually begins: 7:00 p.m.
That makes it perfect timing to have a Niles Township Democratic Meetup Debate Watching Party at Edwardo's! It's lots more fun and exciting to watch togetherand we can even do our own post-debate poll to see who won.
The restaurant has agreed to put up a partition for us and let us tune the TV in to CNN.
So what do you say?
You get seven speakers (well, 6 if Mike Gravel isn't invited to participate) for the price of one!
Please say you'll come!
The debate begins at 7:00. Come early to socialize and get a start on dinner.

Submitted by Leah Yarrow on Sun, 06/12/2005 - 5:35pm.Democratic Meetup of Niles Township Buys First Benefits Manual for VVAW—You Can Help, Too!
In response to an eloquent, educational, and impassioned presentation by Ray Parrish, GI Counselor for the VVAW, members of The Democratic Meetup of Niles Township spontaneously passed the hat at the May 26th meetup and collected $195 for the VVAW to purchase its first veterans benefits manual.
You read that last sentence right: the FIRST manual. We were incredulous when we heard that the VVAW, which offers critical assistance to veterans in their quest for their rightful benefits, doesn’t even have one benefits manual with which to train and educate counselors. The manual, which costs $225, is an indispensable guide for advocates to help veterans and their families obtain benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
