DEMOCRATS Know How to Win Legislative Seats - Now Must Prove They Know How to Hold on to Them During an Election Year
Submitted by Sue Schell on Sun, 07/18/2010 - 4:52pm.The Hardschell Report, Sunday, July 17, 2010, Evanston, IL
Word is out that if in November, the GOP can reclaim the House and/or Senate, GOP leader Boehner wants to repeal the new Wall Street reform laws . I was aghast when I first read this. I'm sorry, but I think it sounds a bit wild, if not irrational. Despite Wall Street plunging us into the worst recession since the Great Depression and unemployment over 10%, how is it that Boehner can have the arogance to think that the public doesn't like the new Wall Street Legislation. I, for one, really am very pleased with the law because it provides some regulatory safeguards to investors. Once again, Boehner has proven himself to be only concerned with protecting the Investment Houses and Banks, and not private investors, like you and me. The Bill, which Boehner is wanting to repeal, just days after its passage, is actually, the first new regulatory law to effect Wall Street since World War II. You see, not having enough regulations guiding our financial institutions, in part, is what led to the near collapse of our financial system. I'm sorry, but this whole experience has been, and remains, just too painful to let go of. How can we forget so quickly the Lehman Brothers demise. Or AIG's near collapse?
You can bet that I am going to begin to let everyone I know my political views on Boehner and the GOP because this kind of nonsense is the last thing America needs. I am urging everyone to make sure the REPUBS do not win back those House and/or Senate seats this Nov. I am planning to be as active as it will take to insure that we WIN every open seat. Also, I urge all of you , to get involved and stay involved in these races around our country because every single seat is important.
Because DEMS have proven that we do know how to win seats in Congress..., now, all we have to do is prove we know how to hold on to them.

The Oscar Goes to Ralph Nader- for his repeat performance in EGOs GONE WILD
Submitted by Sue Schell on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 10:26am.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, MONDAY, FEB. 25, 08, EVANSTON, IL
Kind of hard to believe, but Ralph Nader can not just let it go. In hindsight, I suppose somebody, anybody should have been writing about this poor guy, who we all remember as, "The Spoiler" in 2000, just so he could feel a part of this election process. I mean - come on, to feel a part of the election process - do we all have to actually run for president? I don't think so! But then again, most of us have checked our egos in the ego checkroom and believe we can better serve our country by working for and voting for the most qualified candidate during these troubling times.

EVANSTON DEM NET SALON MTG THIS THURS, 9/27@7pm AT FIREHOUSE GRILL
Submitted by Sue Schell on Mon, 09/24/2007 - 12:58pm.EVANSTON DEMOCRATIC NETWORK SALON NIGHT THIS THURSDAY, SEPT. 27 AT 7pm AT FIREHOUSE GRILL 750 CHICAGO AVE-NW CORNER OF KEDZIE & CHICAGO in EVANSTON
Come visit with this eclectic group of people as we begin our planning for the upcoming presidential campaign. After only our first two meetings this year, our group has the following committees in place/with names of the Chairs responsible for the direction and activities that volunteers will be undertaking.
Following is the committee information:
People Against the War/Veterans Against the Iraq War…John Lee Bingham
Media Corps. & Rapid Response….Sue Schell
Fundraising for Battleground State Travel…..Benita Cohen
Phone Banking Volunteers……… Joe Bianco
Voter Registration Volunteers….Co-Directors Barbara Ebey & Mary Claire Peceny
Visibility Events Volunteers…..Adelaide Rowe
Door-to Door Canvassing Volunteers…..Zachary Zilliack
Please note, that Zach agreed via email to head up the door-to-door canvassing initiative and will be an excellent addition to our team. Many of you may recall, that in the 04 election, Zach was very active in our Kerry campaigning efforts and has just returned to us after finishing law school and his internship these last six months in D.C.
Each Committee Chair will speak about their ideas for the particular committee they lead, going forward. Nothing is off the table,...however, now is the time for valuable brainstorming. Everyone's ideas are valuable.
Many of you are not happy at how the Democrats in Congress have allowed Bush to manipulate things his way. Our genuine concern is about what would happen to us should we have to endure another four years of Republican Hawks. That is why our group is opening its call to volunteers so please be sure to invite family members and friends, so we can attract all like-minded people on this war to work towards electing a strong anti-war person who can win in 08.
This election cycle is going to get ugly and we have to be prepared to help those elected officials attempting to do the right thing in Congress, as well as the candidates we believe to be the best suited for taking over the management of our gov't during one of this nations' most difficult situations. Let's face it, we are a nation in crisis!
The heavy lifting by this group will not happen until the 08 campaign really starts heating up after the primary, so currently, everyone is spending time getting to know each other and proposing ways to best reach undecided voters in 08.
Please do stop in on Thursday, whether you can only make it for 15 minutes. No one is keeping attendance records, also volunteers never lose their jobs, eh? haaaaaaaaaaaa
If you have any questions or need more information, please email me at sue@... . Having said that, John and I hope to see you at the Firehouse Grill on Thursday. We need everyone's help to get things done "RIGHT" in 08, aka "WINNING".
These meetings are co-moderated by Sue Schell and John Lee Bingham
EVANSTON DEM NET LAUNCHED AND LOOKING TO REACH ITS FIRST GOAL
Submitted by Sue Schell on Fri, 09/07/2007 - 11:10am.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Friday, August 31, 2007, Evanston, IL
Yahoo ! Did we ever hear some stimulating conversations at the Evanston Democratic Network monthly gathering Thurs. evening Aug.30. One new person attending the meeting commented that the group appeared to them as being very knowledgeable on the issues and problems confronting government officials in Congress as well as the ongoing problems and lies happening with the Iraq War. I agreed with her comments, saying that not only did we have a great group of activists, we also had a room full of smart people, which is what wins elections and what it will take to win the 08 election.

Evanston Democratic Network Meetup aka Evanston Meetups & IL Kerry Travelers
Submitted by Sue Schell on Sun, 08/26/2007 - 2:45pm.WE WILL BE GATHERING TO SHARE LOTS OF IDEAS AND OPINIONS, AS WELL AS SIGNING PETITIONS FOR THOSE PEOPLE RUNNING ON THE SUPER TUESDAY BALLOT.
For example, some of you may not as of yet heard, but our Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin is going to run for State’s Attorney. In addition, Daniel Biss, running for State Rep in the IL 17th District may have some ways for us to be of service in his race. So, think of this as a mega-brainstorming session prior to things racing ahead at the break-neck speed they tend to go at during a campaign. It has been John and my philosophy not to wear down volunteers to the point of losing them prior to getting to “E” Day. Here is an interesting article forwarded to me by Ashish Sen, Dem Volunteer Media Corps. correspondent, describing the recent rush of legislators to Iraq during the summer break. Should be interesting to those of you who know the legislators who are named in the NYT article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/26/world/middleeast/26visits.html?th&emc=... Susan M. FEELING A LITTLE PROGRESSIVE ARE YOU?
Submitted by Sue Schell on Wed, 07/18/2007 - 3:52pm.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Wednesday, July 18, 07, Evanston, IL
Isn't it strange how in this day of Blue States vs. Red States, progressive vs. static and righteous vs. self-righteous, we are not happy unless we think our side is winning. For the sake of conversation, I will now proceed to label whom I had in mind when I made the above statement. The Red State of course refer to "winners" the Republicans and The Blue State refers to those long-suffering losers" the Democrats. The losers, I mean Democrats are often decried for their Liberalism while the Republicans tend to be proud of their "same-old, same-old”, way of doing business, it kind of makes them feel more reliable I guess.

Submitted by Sue Schell on Tue, 07/10/2007 - 4:41pm.Camp Wellstone comes to DuPage County August 3-5!
We know that many people in power today - regardless of political party or ideology - could do a better job of improving our communities. We need new leaders who understand what it means to send a loved one off to war, teach in a classroom without textbooks, or have to choose between paying for healthcare or buying diapers. We can't sit around and wait for those leaders. It's up to us to make a change. Now you can learn how by joining the famous Camp Wellstone for a training session in DuPage County, Illinois!
Camp Wellstone is a weekend-long training session for building grassroots organizing skills for people interested in making change on issues, electing progressive candidates, or running for office themselves. Don't miss out, register today! August 3-5: DuPage, Illinois
If you are not already a member of the Wellstone Action Network, please join by clicking this link: at http://www.wellstone.org/camp/events_detail.aspx?itemID=10698&catID=3752 to get announcements when trainings open for registration. The cost is $100 or just $50 for students, low-income, or unemployed participants.
Camp participants are responsible for their own accommodations. The training location will be announced to registered participants.

We will also be reporting about the status of each of the 08 Democratic campaigns, their immediate need for volunteers and what those needs are.
As you may have heard, The Democratic Party of Evanston has nominated Sen. Barrack Obama as its choice for the 08 Presidential ticket. However, we will make ourselves available to all Democrats in the race. I hope everyone feels invested in our mission of assisting a Democrat in order to win back the White House. Please remember to invite friends, especially those who have been complaining about our government, but not doing a darn thing to change our leadership.
New people are always welcomed to join our team as we head together to VICTORY in NOVEMBER. Let's hope that this will be a reunion of sorts from the old "Kerry Meetup" days where many new friendships were made and many lessons learned. Your hosts for the night will be Sue Schell and John Lee Bingham previously part of the Kerry Meetup team. So do plan on coming, even if you can only stop in for one hour.
Although not necessary, PLEASE RSVP so we know how many handouts will be needed.

Progressive Dinner with Evanston Progressives
Submitted by Sue Schell on Fri, 06/15/2007 - 11:27pm.The evening will begin with appetizers and drinks hosted by Mayor Lorraine Morton at the Ecology Center. Then, you will progress to one of our dinner sites where you will be hosted by Congresswoman Jan Shakowsky, State Senator Jeffrey Schoenberg, State Representative Julie Hamos, County Commissioner Larry Suffredin or Water Reclamation Board Member Debra Shore.
The night ends when all guests reconvene for dessert and coffee at the Ecology Center. Private bus transportation throughout the night will move everyone from location to location.
This wild night has received rave reviews from attendees over the years and is often described as the least expensive dinner for two that people have enjoyed in years.
Once again, all are welcome. You do not have to be an Evanston resident in order to attend. However, it is highly recommended that Republicans may want to think twice before joining in this very Progressive Democratic evening of food, fun and conversation!
To purchase tickets for this great event, please go to www.dpoe.org and look for the link "rsvp".
We look forward to seeing and hearing from all past Kerry campaign volunteers and of course, all volunteers for any Democratic issues or candidates. Try to reserve tickets early. This usually is a sell-out event, which just keeps growing every year.
It truly is a blast!

Coming out of the First Turn in Evanston, Obama Gallops to an Early Lead in the 10 Candidate '08 Presidential Race
Submitted by Sue Schell on Mon, 06/11/2007 - 2:13pm.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Monday, June 11, 2007, Evanston, IL On Sunday, June 10, members of the Democratic Party of Evanston had an opportunity to cast their votes for the party candidate of their choice to nominate in the 08 presidential race.
Although this “horserace”, hmmmm, I mean Presidential race, will be the longest in history, the recent action by the Illinois General Assembly to move the Illinois primary up to February 5, 2008, from its traditional March date, guarantees Illinois voters a much greater impact on presidential elections, according to Evanston Democratic committeeman and Illinois State Sen. Jeff Schoenberg (D-Evanston).
"The early DPOE presidential endorsement session this past Sunday undoubtedly gives Evanston an active role in defining the state’s political landscape for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination,” Schoenberg said. “Since Illinois is a neighboring state to Iowa, we will also have the chance to add a progressive influence to the nation’s political landscape."
Of the 10 candidate field, only two had sent representatives to speak before the official voting process began, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, co-chair of Barack Obama’s campaign spoke on his behalf and Elaine Weisse spoke on behalf of Hillary Clinton.
Following their presentations, the Democratic crowd of approximately 275 Evanston Democrats cast their ballots for their favorite candidate in the 08 presidential race. All DPOE current members were eligible to vote in the endorsement session.
Join Us for Daniel Biss' 08 Campaign Kick-Off Party (Evanston)
Submitted by Sue Schell on Sat, 06/02/2007 - 8:43pm.Join us and other Progressives, For Food, Fun & Conversation This Sunday, June 3 AT 2 P.M.
DANIEL BISS IS RUNNING FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE ILLINOIS 17TH DISTRICT. If you don’t live in the District, for Democratic sakes, come any way!
AND DO...PLEASE INVITE FRIENDS!!!!
Event Date: Sunday, June 3, 07
Place: Sue & Tim Schell’s House, 1246 Hinman Ave., SW corner of Hinman/Dempster, Evanston
Time: 3 to 5 p.m.
Ticket Price: $40
PLEASE RSVP AT 847 328 2734
Daniel Biss, who is running for State Representative represents everything good about Democrats. Personally, I wish he could run for President, however, he does need to run for something a little less ambitious first.
The 17th district, which includes parts of Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette, Morton Grove, Winnetka, Northfield, Glenview, and Northbrook, votes overwhelmingly Democratic for all other offices. However, it’s current State Representative is Republican, Elizabeth Coulson, whose voting record, not surprisingly, looks like that of a Republican.
After what Illinois accomplished in November, just think of what we can do for this area of Illinois, which definitely should be a Democratic State District! Biss has the backing of Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Cook County Commissioner Larry Sufrredin and Water Reclamation Board Member, Deb Shore.
This should be an exciting race to watch because Democrats have an opportunity to re-claim this Illinois District that has been held by a Republican posing as liberal on issues. However, Biss' is prepared to challenge how Coulson's voting record in Springfield, really reflects her Republican values, which under scrutiny will surely surprise many of her constituents.
WE HOPE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO JOIN US FOR THE AFTERNOON TO HEAR DANIEL SPEAK ABOUT THIS IMPORTANT RACE!

Film Premiere: "Terra Incognita: The Promise & Peril of Stem Cell Research" (Evanston)
Submitted by Sue Schell on Mon, 05/07/2007 - 1:13pm.T E R R A I N C O G N I T A : The Promise & The Peril of Stem Cell Research
directed by Maria Finitzo • produced by Kartemquin Films
Terra Incognita offers a close-up look inside the life and laboratory of Dr. Jack Kessler ¬ renowned stem cell expert and the head of neurology at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
In 2001, Dr. Kessler's 15-year-old daughter, Allison, fell while skiing, leaving her paralyzed below the waist. In response to her accident, Kessler changed the scientific focus of his lab to regenerating the damaged spinal cord.
Featuring personal interviews with the Kesslers, the lab researchers and others affected by spinal cord injury, Terra Incognita movingly depicts the high stakes involved in the quest to harness the full potential of stem cell medicine.
The film will have its Chicago-area premiere at two public outreach events sponsored by the Silverstein Lecture Series, Center for Genetic Medicine, Northwestern University.

Isn't It Odd -- Rush Is Still on the Air But Imus Isn't
Submitted by Sue Schell on Mon, 05/07/2007 - 12:19pm.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT,MONDAY, MAY 7, 07 EVANSTON, IL
For those of you who have yet to see it, I caution you...it really is infuriating. However, because Rush Limbaugh referred the listeners of his radio show to run out and watch a parody, Obama, The Magic Negro, many brain-starved people are doing exactly that.

ATTENDING THIS MEETING IN EVANSTON COULD CHANGE THE OUTCOME OF THE 08 PRESIDENTIAL RACE
Submitted by Sue Schell on Fri, 04/27/2007 - 3:32pm.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Friday, April 27, 07, Evanston, IL What would you say to me if I said, Coming to Sunday's meeting could change the results of the 08 election? Forgive me if you think I'm getting delusional, but have you seen his website? I'm talking about,Barack Obama. Just look for yourself by going to http://www.barackobama.com/ No wonder his campaign has leapt up in the polls over the last month. This is one well-managed campaign that knows how to put its money and efforts into winning.
Now how about this strategy for winning? The campaign is teaching volunteers how to best spend their energies and how to network those energies community by community across the nation. That is exactly what the Obama Camp is intending to do. For more information about this, go to

AN EMBARRASMENT OF RICHES FOR DEMOCRATS IN 08
Submitted by Sue Schell on Fri, 04/27/2007 - 12:06pm.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Friday, April 27, 07, Evanston, IL After watching last nights DEMOCRATIC DEBATE--I have to say, the Democratic Party has an embarrassment of riches to choose from for our Presidential nominee in 08.
Hasn't it been rather comical watching the Republicans scrambling to find someone to take on Rudy Giuliani? Even the party regulars know how divisive he can be. In other words, he is exactly NOT what this country needs!
Thankfully, our Democratic candidates all clearly were united in their belief that now was the time to bring our troops home. The American people are fed up with watching this illbegotten war and anyone familiar with the tribal history of Iraq, would recognize that adding an extra 20,000 soldiers will not make the country any safer. In fact a 'surge' of this size, "does not a surge make" when you consider the last census in July 06 established an Iraq population of 26,783,383.

TRACKING WORLD NEWS IN AN UNBIASED FASHION
Submitted by Sue Schell on Tue, 04/24/2007 - 9:57am.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Tuesday, April 24, 07, Evanston, IL If like me, you enjoy tracking what the rest of the world is thinking about America and many of the global issues confronting, not just the U.S., but our neighbors across the globe, chances are you will find the two websites below useful.
Since many of us like to write letters to the editor, blog or just plain educate ourselves as to what is going on in this world, I highly recommend you bookmark these sites for research purposes. Websites like these are the miracle made possible by the Internet. They are so useful in keeping us in touch with the rest of the world in their own words. Don't you always find it rather refreshing to locate a story in a foreign newspaper? Especially a story that our U.S. media barely makes a mention of?
The Internet really is the gift that keeps on giving. To be able to keep in touch with the rest of the world in their own words, simply amazing. We don't have to rely on a Time/Warner or Tribune Company. Granted it takes a little time, but it really is well worth it. It's so nice to be able to read world news unfiltered by the Bush Camp bought U.S. media. This is the very reason I highly recommend viewing America.com, http://www.watchingamerica.com/index.shtml .
This website offers a a compilation of translated newspaper articles from places other than the US. In order to read a paper from some other country (not translated), scroll to the end of the page to find the countries and newspapers.
The second site is debkafile.com . This website originates in Israel and gives a view of issues that we seldom receive in the U.S. I for one appreciate reading their coverage of the Middle East happenings and find it more thorough.
So, there you have it--your research for writing tips for the day. Now go have some fun researching.

THE GLOBAL POVERTY ACT MISSES MEDIA ROUNDS DUE TO IMUS & ANNA NICOLE SMITH
Submitted by Sue Schell on Fri, 04/13/2007 - 5:15pm.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Friday, April 13, 07, On March 1st 2007, Congressman Adam Smith and Congressman Spencer Bachus introduced a bill, H.R. 1302, The Global Poverty Act, that will require President Bush to develop and implement a strategy for ending global poverty. With so much real news happening in our world, from Anna Nicole Smith's death to the 24 hour coverage of Imus being tarred and feathered for his slur of the female Black Athletes of Rutger's University, is it any wonder that this needed legislation got completly put to the side. I mean , just look at all the dying happening in Iraq. Isn't there enough bad news here in America? Why should we be concerned about Global Poverty? Here's one good reason...because we can.
If you are reading this, chances are you own a computer or have the use of one. This means you are not amongst the millions across our globe suffering in poverty every day that you spend on earth. It is, however, lucky for them, that there are 42 U.S. Representatives in Washington who recognize that somthing has to be done about this problem. Few people understand that wherever poverty happens on the globe, it affects you, it is your problem as well, and no one can afford to sit back and tolerate it.
Here are the names of the 42 Reps. in Congress co-sponsoring the Bill:

Parental notification. School choice. HPV. Mandatory HIV and mental health screening. DCFS reform. Contested divorce and child custody. Does Illinois have a problem when it comes to protecting families inclusively? What are the social, economic, and political implications to the community at-large when family relations become unjustly marginalized by our public policy? Can we create a sustainable future
where the position of parents will be nurtured and protected?

Democrat "UNITY NOW" Cocktail Party with Jan Schakowsky & Congressional Candidate Phil Hare, IL-17 (Evanston)
Submitted by Sue Schell on Tue, 09/12/2006 - 10:56am.COME TO THIS DEMOCRAT "UNITY NOW" COCKTAIL PARTY AND MEET CONGRESSIONAL CANDIDATE PHIL HARE
*****CONGRESSWOMAN JAN SCHAKOWSKY, HONORARY CHAIR**********
This Fundraiser – at the home of Sue and Tim Schell is being held in honor of Congressman Lane Evans. Congressman Evans Legacy as a PROGRESSIVE VOICE IN CONGRESS,must be retained. His decision not to run again due to health reasons, makes this an important race for DEMS to support because the REPUBLICANS have targeted it as a "must win back" seat.
That is why we are being urged by the Democratic Party of Illinois and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky to support Candidate Phil Hare for Congress in the IL 17th District. After serving as Evans Dirstrict Director for 25 years, he has impressed those around him as an excellent candidate well suited to take on the issues that matter to us the most. Hare will continue to be a PROGRESSIVE VOICE FOR ILLINOIS IN CONGRESS.
During this event, you will have an opportunity to meet and hear from Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Candidate Phil Hare about the upcoming Nov. election.
Great appetizers, drinks and political/community fellowship will also be served.
Our Goal is to Raise Campaign Funds for this Progressive Candidate.Prior to Evans holding this seat, historically it was a Republican district, which means the Republicans are supporting this race with lots of dollars. Shouldn't Democrats view this seat as just as important as the Chicagoland seats? Surely the Republicans have!
Host Committee Members are:
Sue & Tim Schell, Dr. Robert Cohen & Benita, Daniel Dennison, Daniel Biss, Rennie Heath, and Judy Freeman
Please R.S.V.P. to Sue Schell at 847 328 2734 or email @ s.schell@susanschellproductions.com

Wolf... Wolf... Wolf... Screamed the GOP
Submitted by Sue Schell on Thu, 09/07/2006 - 1:47pm.THE HARD SCHELL REPORT, Thursday, September 07, 2006, Evanston, IL
There was a Man that lived in a big White House who tended a nation’s business. It was difficult work for him, so he devised a plan to get more respect from the people who lived in his country, thereby allowing him to wear the name “The Decider”.
He rushed from city to city calling out "Terrorists, Terrorists," and Congress gave him the right to use his nation’s might to catch the terrorists. Thus, began the war in Afganistan. This pleased The Man so much that a few months later he tried the same trick. He took his nation into another war based on the lie that Iraq had WMDs and the nation must seize them because surely they were headed our way.
